Vicky thank you for posting this gem of information. I went to view the site and I saw a name that rang a bell! On the site it lists this name of a Marie Canada:
Jean DAVIS(1) was born in Nov 1854 in Pembina, ND, USA. He died on 26 Feb 1855 in Pembina, ND, USA. (2) Witnesses: Norbert Laurence Antoine Pepin
Priest: Father J. Foyolle Parents: William DAVIS and Marie CANADA.
Now what makes this name interesting is the only other place I have seen this name listed (and which I found baffling and confusing) is Fr. Madlon's War Eagle family tree.
For those of you who have the tree, you will note that under the listing of War Eagles children in the far right hand corner Fr Madlon lists Wakaseya/Long Foot + "a captive chippewas woman" and in faint writing the name of "Julia Gage."
I have ICS records indicating Peter Long Foot (abt 1831 - 1914) was married to Julia "Cankuwastewin (
The children he listed of Long Foot and/or Julia Gage are:
1. Andrew War who married Sarah Ashes 2. Mary + Eli A ? (can't make out complete last name but could be Archambeau--no research done) 3. Makagahomani (David) Worldturner (born abt 1857) + CANADA
and I found a 4th child not listed on Fr Madlon's tree:
4. Winona (abt 1861)--On the 1886 ICS with Wakaseya and Cankuwastewin she is listed as daughter
Cankutwastewin information on the 1900 US Fed Ind Pop Census states: "Full blood Santee Sioux, married 35 yrs, had 5 children--2 living, born in MN, parents born in MN, can not r/w/spk Eng, ration Indian."
That is the background information I have on the parents and siblings of David Worldturner. The ICS records I have for him indicate he married Emma "Wawisutowin" or "Wawiyutanyewin". In the 1900 US Fed Ind Pop Census, the information I have for Emma is: Full blood Santee Sioux, born 1879 in N.D., parents born in MN, married ll yrs, bore 5 children - 3 are living, ration Indian, cannot r/w/spk Eng.
What I am wondering is could this Emma be related to the CANADA family in North Dakota listed above? Or does anyone know anything about a mixed blood family with that name?

You should alsotype "The Filles du Roi" in google. this will give you the list of young women who were brought to the colony of New France in the late 17th Century(I get mixed upon dates sometimes) to marry the Frenchmen who had settled there,as part ofa program instituted by King Louie 14th,topromote settlement of New France.. Some of the women were provided with a dowry You will also see a link to the soldiers of the Carignon-Miliares Regiment who also came over to New France, and settled inCanada. there are some familiar names here also.
